To ascertain where the problem is coming from you will need a technical person. The fact is this could be the result of a newly installed incompatible software or hardware, ordinarily. On the other hand it could be the result of a failing hardware. If it is ever so persistent, chances are that the hardware responsible is the hard drive. It must have developed bad sectors enough to cause malfunction.
Could be a number of problems, including but not limited to...

1) NTFS file structure is corrupt
2) MBR has been compromised (corrupt)
3) ATA/SATA drivers are corrupt
4) Hard drive is on the way out

Boot your computer using the OS install disk, and run CHKDSK /f from within the recovery console. CHKDSK /p will repair a corrupted NTFS file system (if that's the problem).

If CHKDSK options don't fix the problem, or if the drive is not recognized by your OS, it may be your MBR (Master Boot Record). Use the command fixmbr from within recovery console, then reboot.

MBR may be data destructive, so it's best to use CHKDSK options first. Also, if you are able to get the system to boot up, you'll want to save/recover any data on the hard drive, then run thorough diagnostics on the drive to make sure it's not on the way out (contact Dell for further information regarding this).
