Dell Inspiron 6000 Power Problem

\015 The power supply to my laptop is touchy when plugged into the adapter. Sometimes it charges fine, but most of the time I have to hold the cable in the port with a bit of pressure and flex it one way or another, and sometimes that doesn't even work. I have been able to keep enough power in it to keep it going, but it usually requires constant attention while the computer is on.I am 99% sure it is not an adapter problem as I have two of them and have the problem with both, even though they are showing green lights and neither of the pins are bent or missing, Is this something that can be repaired? Is it worth it since the computer is 4 years old (bearing in mind I really don't have the money to upgrade)? Thanks, Leah\015

Its a problem with the connector on the motherboard. You may need to get someone to check it out.
Most likely what has happened is that over time the stress of the power cord pulling on the power circuit on the motherboard has weakened it's structural integrity so that either one of two situations is occuring. The pins inside the little plastic piece are pulling out of their places or the solder has come loose from the power circuit where it connects to the motherboard. This has always been a big gripe of mine, the laptop makers do not secure the power circuit device to the case, the only thing holding it in place is three solder joints on the motherboads. So after years of the power adapter pulling on and putting stress on this piece (or a sudden jolt from someone dropping the laptop or causing the power adapter to be yanked violently), it breaks. I have fixed several of these, but some were too severely damaged to be salvaged. If it is a damaged power circuit piece then the repair is tricky (because they do not have these exact pieces lying around at Radio Shack). They have some that (if you know what you are doing) can be used to repair this. This is NOT a job for an amateur! It requires total disassembly of the laptop and removal of the motherboard and some soldering/desoldering and electrical experience. So what can you do?
\015\012You could try some of these makeshift solutions. But first the precautions! Note that these are temporary workarounds and may eventually cause further damage. The problem with this situation is that when electricity does not have a clear path (or constant path) but yet is close enough, the electricity can "jump" the gap. Over time this has the same effect as a spark plug does in a car, each time the spark jumps it creates a little burn spot and over time the metal looses it's ability to conduct electricity or the worse case it tries to find a new path. So here are some workarounds.
\015\0121) Make sure you have your data backed up - Like Now!!
\015\0122) One trick is to wedge wooden toothpicks around the power circuit piece until it remains on. One warning - do not push too hard or you may worsen the situation.
\015\0123) another trick is to get some clear tape and tape the adapter to one side so that enough pressure is applied to make it work. Make sure you do not obstruct any air flow openings in the case.
\015\012Hopefully this explains it and helps.
