Having problems with your Dell Inspiron 1721 Notebook ?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 that will not power up. A fully charged battery will power up the laptop, but the battery will not charge in the pc. I ordered a new power adapter and the same result. When I pull the battery out and try to boot up without it as the dell site suggested I do not get any lights on the power icons. Power, Cntr Power, FN Power, and wifi slide switch have no result. What else could fail in the charging and power system?

Answers :

This is a common problem and most often it is the DC jack in the back where you plug in the power supply. Does moving the plug in the jack make any diffrence? Dell motherboards have issues with bad solder joints at the DC jack. I also see people tripping over the power supply cable and it destroys the jack. Jack replacement can be expensive. I do them for $75.00 in Mass. but see people charging as much as $150.00 to do it. The other thing it can be is a bad motherboard. I see many Dell laptops will power up on A/C and Battery but will not charge the battery. Then again we see your problem where it will run on battery charged off another laptop but will not run on A/C or charge the battery. 95% of the time it is the jack. Let us know how you make out. Remove battery
unplug power adapter
then hold the power button down for 10 seconds.
plug power adapter back in and press power button
if system does not power on
remove:
hard drive
cd/dvd
memory
wireless card
bluetooth

once parts are removed power on your system . try it with one stick of memory installed .if it still doesn't power up your systemboard is bad.if it does reinstall the parts one by on to se which one keeps it from powering on.

My Dell Dimension 5000 is stuck with a solid amber light on the power switch and solid amber light on the motherboard. Switch 'clicks' ok but light only goes out when power lead removed. No fan, no bleeps, no bootup, just solid lights. The 5000 doesn't have other LED lights to assist. The PC got into this state after local power cut, when power returned.
