Having problems with your Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook ?

Gets stuck on boot up, Shows Dell logo but red line only goes about half way. Will eventually turn on after several tries and if I hold F2 at the same time (not sure if holding F2 makes the difference). Recent history compute turns itself off at random times....thought it might be over heating...did a little inside dusting but afraid to take it apart...now isn't doing that but I am not leaving it on too long. I did try a diagnostics test but it turned itself off in the middle of it and I didn't

WARNING (if you do not feel comfortable disassembling laptops then the procedure below might not be a good idea and you might possibly want to have someone that is do the solution below (but from what you have said this is most likely what has to be done
\015\012
\015\012NOTE: If the warranty on your dell laptop has not yet expired then you can call into tech support and tell them you need a new fan and they will send a technician from your area to you to replace it which will result in the completion of the procedure below at the same time)
\015\012
\015\012To properly remove ALL of the dust build up from the system you will need to access the internal fan completely
\015\012
\015\012To get the proper access to the fan and heatsink you need to remove the following: (blowing compressed air through the vents will not remove the dust buildup described here)
\015\012
\015\012•Remove the battery.
\015\012•Remove the hard drive.
\015\012•Remove the hinge cover.
\015\012•Remove the keyboard.
\015\012•Remove the Mini-Card.
\015\012•Remove the LCD.
\015\012•Remove the palm rest.
\015\012
\015\012To do the above follow these steps in this order:
\015\012
\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Remove the 11 palm rest screws from the bottom of the system
  2. \015\012
  3. Using a flathead screw driver, pry up the hinge cover to remove it.
  4. \015\012
  5. Remove the two screws securing the keyboard to the chassis
  6. \015\012
  7. Rotate and lift the keyboard from the chassis
  8. \015\012
  9. carefully Rotate (lift) the keyboard cable lock, and then remove the keyboard from the chassis
  10. \015\012
  11. Disconnect the two antenna cables from the Mini-Card
  12. \015\012
  13. Press the two securing levers towards each other to release the Mini-Card.
  14. \015\012
  15. Lift the Mini-Card to a 45-degree angle and remove it from the system
  16. \015\012
  17. Remove the four securing screws on the back and bottom of the system for the LCD
  18. \015\012
  19. Turn the system over and open the LCD.
  20. \015\012
  21. Remove the video securing screw (from wire connected to end of vid cable plug) and reroute the diversity cables
  22. \015\012
  23. Pull up on the video cable to disconnect it
  24. \015\012
  25. Remove the two securing screws (1 by each hinge) and lift up the LCD to remove it.
  26. \015\012
  27. Disconnect the palm rest cable.
  28. \015\012
  29. Release the captive screw and lift the palm rest from the system
\015\012 Now you should have total access to the fan
\015\012
\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Disconnect the fan cable from the system.
  2. \015\012
  3. Remove the two securing screws from the fan and lift it from the system
\015\012 When removing the fan you should see a "layer of dust" almost like a blanket between the fan and the heatsink
\015\012This layer of dust is preventing the air from the fan from making contact with the heatsink resulting in crashing and overheating and so on
\015\012
\015\012NOTE: You will notice two heatsinks there one is for the video card the other for the cpu i would recommend cleaning any dust build up from both of them since the video card on that model can go out pretty easy if it gets to hot.
\015\012
\015\012 18. Repeat the procedure in reverse order to reassemble
\015\012
\015\012Hope this info helps
Typically these symptoms are caused by one of the following. There may be more reasons, but just covering the most common here.
\015\012- Old worn out or malfunctioning batteries can cause this issue. Remove the power and battery, then plug in just the power, leaving the battery off. Try using the laptop without battery. If the problems go away, purchasing a new battery should do the trick.
\015\012- Overheating due to diminished (wearing out or plugged with dust or even dead cooling fan). First purchase a can of "canned-air" or other brand forced-air duster available in any electroncs store for a couple dollars. Use this to force air though all air vents etc. in an attempt to dislodge any dust and debris that can plug the cooling fan and vents. If it is still having the heat issue after the cleaning, purchasing an inexpensive laptop cooling platform should do the trick in leiu of having the fan repaired at a repair shop. It is a platform that you place your laptop on that has fans in it that cool it down. These usually cost less than $20 at most electronics stores.
\015\012
\015\012Hope this helps.
