Overheating dell inspiron 1420

\015 Dell 1420 is overheating and very hot to the touch. and dell is giving me the run around. I keep hearing that I need to send in my laptop. That will take upto 14 business days. So to no availe they are not really interested in solving the issue. Here is the email that I sent them. Thankyou for your responce. I would like to\015\012get this matter resolved as quick as possible. I have spoken with\015\012agents and also have use the online chat as well. \015\012The issue is my inspiron 1420 is getting hot\015\012to the touch after 5 to 10 minutes of use. I have it on a duel fan\015\012cooling pad which is not helping with it.This is the same issue that\015\012was happening with my inspiron 600m that I use to have before the 1420\015\012was sent to me as a replacement. The online agent flashed the bios and\015\012that is not helping with the issue. The agent that I spoke with\015\012indicated that I would need to send this back to them so that it could\015\012be worked on. That opion is unacceptable. This is the only computer\015\012that I have and use it on a daily basis. I have been a victim of\015\012idenity theft and have way too much personal information on that\015\012computer. A agent recommended that I take out the hard drive before I\015\012send it in and that also is unacceptabel. I have only had this laptop\015\012for about 3 months and it started overheating over a month ago. I have\015\012done some research on the inspiron and the issues that they have been\015\012having and it seems that the whole inspiron line have this issue of\015\012becoming hot to the touch. My daughter who is 6yrs old was using the\015\012600m and showed me her legs that were red after using the laptop and\015\012come to me and told me that the computer was too hot. This is a huge\015\012saftey issue. \015\012At this point I will accept nothing less than\015\012a new laptop not a refurb and not a inspiron of any kind. I understand\015\012that this issue falls under what Dell refers to as a saftey cature(and\015\012I only know that term is because 2 managers have stated that to me once\015\012I told them the laptops have become hot to the touch.) So I know that\015\012Dell is aware if the issues that the inspirons have along with the\015\012number of customers that I have been able to research online that have\015\012had the same issue or worse(actually catching on fire).\015\012I hope that Dell will resolve this issue to my\015\012liking which is providing a laptop that will work properly and will be\015\012safe for my family to use without fear of injury to them or my house.\015\012I look forward to your to your call today. Here is Dell's responce and yes I post the whole email and please anyone having issue use the number that is in it.The notes that I\015\012have say that your system is getting hot, and that you want the system\015\012to be replaced. The system that you have is no longer under\015\012contract, and the only way that we would be able to provide support\015\012would be to send the system to our repair depot for evaluation. Please let me know if you wish to proceed and I will have Ruben assist you in getting the system to the depot for evaluation.\015\012\015\012Thank You\015\012\015\012Jonathan Royer\015\012\015\012Dell CSS Case Management Supervisor\015\012\015\012Hours: 9am - 6pm M-F CST\015\012\015\0121-800-766-3355 ext. 7289391This is a load of garbage. Dell knows there is a problem with their systems and then will give you the run around to get it fixed. I will never buy a dell again.\015

Hey there, I have two possible solutions for ya. First, I know it is only 3 months old but I would check to see if the heat sink is clean. They are located in the back left corner. The part that should be cleaned looks sort of like fins on an air conditioner. If you shine a light through the slots you can see the fins. The dirt builds up on the inside of these fins and cause overheating. The easiest way to clean is with canned air but if you are to the point of overheating you may need to disassemble the laptop. Second suggestion is to download and install speedfan. Open it up, click on configure then options, there is a box to check for DELL support, click that. This will tell you your temps as well as if any sensors are missing or not reporting. Let me know what you find out.

click on SpeedFan 4.38. in second paragraph (download)

Unfortunately, it is the nature of a laptop to run hot. Would you believe that the intel chip in you machine is designed to run reliably all the way up to 105 degrees C?

You may have dust or hair gunking up the heatsink. You could try blowing out all of the vent holes with compressed air.

You could also try following the tutorial in this thread if you're feeling adventurous.
