I have long since gone to Dell support, the machine neither recognises the harware nor any attempts to upload the Dell drivers. It says 'unable to open file'. Regarding the monitor and soundcard It is like the machine has become largely blind and dumb.
It sounds as though you need to install drivers for the hardware that is not working properly after your re-formatting and re-installation of windows.I have found that although windows xp will provide almost any drivers needed, many drivers for Dell systems are not. Just to check which hardware is not working properly, go to the start button, go to control panel, then performance and maintainance, then system, next hardware, and finally device manager. Any hardware listed that has a yellow question mark to the left is not working properly, most likely because the drivers are not installed. The easiest solution is if you have the original CD's that came with your computer. If you do, and you have one that is labeled " resource CD ", or if it is labeled that it contains the device drivers for the hardware not working your task should be relatively easy. Just insert the disc, it should auto start, if it does not, start it manually from my computer. It will automatically provide the drivers needed. If you do not have the CD needed, you can write down the specifics of the hardware not working from the device manager by clicking on each item and going to properties. After you have that information, go to the following Dell website and manually look for and download the drivers you need.
