Computer not starting, i have a Dell Dimesion 8250

\015 My computer is not starting up when i press the power button. I have checked all the wires and they are all plugged in. The power sockets do have power as well as my power strip. when i unplug the computer's power cable from the computer itself the lights on the back light up, fan runs for a second and it all turns off. The light on the motherboard is on though when it is plugged in which i believe means it has power. The problem to me seems like the power button is not signaling the computer to start up.Nothing is broken and i smell no burnt parts or rubber.\015

It could be the power switch itself, in which case you can probably get a refurb switch from Dell for about 10 bucks. There is a way to bridge the switch connection at the motherboard and boot up if the switch itself is what has gone bad. You'll have to look up the wiring diagram on Dell's technical specs site and see what to jump.
\015\012 But it is more likely to be caused by the power supply having gone bad. I would take it in to a local tech shop and ask them to check your power supply. They will have a test device they can use to see if it is no longer any good.
\015\012If you prefer to troubleshoot it the old-fashioned way, consider these articles and flow charts to help you eliminate the obvious.
\015\012If you're feeling more adventurous, you can try to follow this guy's advice: http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2005/03/02/learn-how-to-diagnose-power-supply-problems/
\015\012But power supplies aren't that costly. It's a quick swap you could do yourself, and those local guys probably have one in the shop they'd love to sell you if yours doesn't check out ok.
\015\012I hope this gives you a good sense of the options and possible direction to take.

My Dell OptiPlex GX 520 has frozen. It runs Windows XP. Here in the UK, we have had a cold snap in what the papers are calling "The Coldest Day". Dunno if that's got anything to do with it. Anyway, I came down in the morning and the screen was off as if it had gone into sleep mode, but shaking the mouse or tapping the keyboard did not work. So, I tried turning it off and on again. The bootup screen came on, and the bar filled nearly up to the top, but then froze there. I left it for five minutes
