Having problems with your Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop ?

Dell Dimension 5100 No Power No lights

\015 I have a Dell Dimension 5100 and it will not power up. None of the lights on the front work either. I am getting the green led on the motherboard to light up. But the fan doesn't come on and the hard drive doesn't power up.\015\012So far I have searched the internet and it appears the main causes of this appear to either a bad power supply, a bad motherboard, or shorted USB ports.\015\012So I started with the USB ports and could not see any contacts that would appear to be shorted. \015\012Next I wanted to check the power supply. So I purchased a power supply tester. Unfortunately even though it said it was a 20 and 24 pin tester, it wouldn't work on the 24pin. So I had to buy a different one. Needless to say I could have bought a new power supply by the time I was done. But the tester is showing the supply as ok. And the fan and hard drive powered up when the tester was plugged in.\015\012So that made me about 95% sure it was the motherboard. So I purchased a new motherboard (J8885). \015\012I just finished installing the new motherboard and unfortunately that did not fix the issue. Still same thing. Green LED on motherboard. No other lights. Neither the fan or hard drive cycles.\015\012So I'm a bit frustrated. I feel like I'm throwing good money after bad. I'm about $140 into this with no fix in sight.\015\012Any suggestions from anyone. The only other things I can think is that either somehow the power supply is still bad even though the tester said it was good. Or the switch on the front panel assembly (X8682) is not working to actually turn the computer on? \015\012Is there some way to jumper the pins on the motherboard to try and turn it on without the using the front panel switch? That would let me know if that switch was the problem somehow? \015\012Otherwise I'm left to just try buying a new power supply and hope that is the issue. Or try buying a new front panel assembly and hope that is the fix.\015\012Thanks for any input.\015\012\015\012-Eric\015

First let me commend you on your troubleshooting skills.

Now this is my advice.

First things first, try a different power supply. It is not uncommon for a power supply tester to give a bad power supply a good rating and they can be had for under $25 or, swap one from another computer that you know is working...it doesn't need to be mounted, just plug in the two motherboard connectors and one to the hard drive (to give it a load) and check it out. Even before that, double check to make sure the red switch on the back of the power supply is set to 115v (or whatever voltage you use, I'm assuming you are in the states).

Now to check the switch. If you have a multimeter handy, all you need to do is figure out which color wires are associated with the switch on the front panel. Usually if you remove the front panel, you can see which colors are associated with the switch. Pull the plug off the motherboard header and test the resistance by putting the multimeter leads into the parts identified by the colors of wires you figured out were to the switch. When you depress the switch, it should show 0 and when you don't, it should show 1. Alternatively you can find out which headers those colors go to on the motherboard and short those two pins with a small screwdriver and see if it powers up.

Good luck and let me know if anything here works. Please take a moment to give this solution a rating of fixya.

My Dell Dimension 5000 is stuck with a solid amber light on the power switch and solid amber light on the motherboard. Switch 'clicks' ok but light only goes out when power lead removed. No fan, no bleeps, no bootup, just solid lights. The 5000 doesn't have other LED lights to assist. The PC got into this state after local power cut, when power returned.
