Dell Dimension 2400 - Adding second HD

\015 I am having a problem adding a second HD to my Dimension 2400.Original HD is a 80 GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9. Second HD is a 250 GB Western Digital WD2500AAJB. My goal is to run Windows XP on the WD HD with all my program files and use the Maxtor HD to hold data files.I installed the WD HD and initialized it and formatted it through XP's disk management with no problem. Windows was recognizing both drives. Now here's where things went wrong. I shut down the computer and disconnected th original Maxtor HD. I kept the new WD HD connected and installed XP SP2 on it. (I booted directly from the XP CD and installed it that way). Now the computer will not recognize the old Maxtor HD. Even when I just connect the Maxtor HD without the WD HD, it won't let me boot. I can boot to the WD HD, but when I do, XP won't recognize the Maxtor HD. If I go to Disk Management, it shows the Maxtor HD as unallocated and won't let me initialize it.I tried adjusting all of the jumper settings but to no avail. Is there something I am missing here? Is all of the data on my Maxtor HD comprimised?\015

Answers :

I presume that the hard drives are ATA drives, and if the WD and Maxtor are installed on the same IDE cable then the boot drive, the WD HD needs to have the jumper set to Master or Master with Slave drive, and the Maxtor needs the jumper set to Slave drive.
If the computer on boot up doesn't recognise the boot drive the move the jumper to the CSL setting.

If the Maxtor is on the second IDE cable it does not matter if the jumper to either Master or Slave provided you do not have anything else connected to this cable. If you have a CD or DVD connected to the second IDE cable as well as the Maxtor HD then you need to check the devices on this cable (ie. the jumpers) are not set the same on both devices.

On boot up go into the BIOS and check that the master and slave devices are set to Auto (detect).

You should after booting up now see both hard drives and any CD/DVD.
The data on the Maxtor drive would include your original Windows and programs and data, you would need to remove these redundant files and programs to recover disk space.

If you can see on boot up all the hard drives and CD/DVD (as master and slave drives) but if you do not see the Maxtor drive from My Computer, then you need to delete the partition on the Maxtor drive, create a new partition, and format the drive, in this case you will not recover any of your original data.
To do this, you need to go to the Control Panel, Then Administrative Tools, then Computer Management then Disk Management. Right Click on Disk 1 (it should show a 80 Gb hard drive), delete the partition, then it would show this as an unallocated drive.
Right Click on this drive again and create a primary partition, follow the instructions and format the drive in NTFS file format.
Set the jumper on the maxtor to cable select and see if that fix's things ?
