Need to replace the hard drive - Dell Dimension 2300 PC Desktop

Answers :

In the dell 2300 you need to open up the side panel which you can by the latch in the back of the tower.

Once you open up the side panel then towards the bottom of the tower in the bottom right hand corner will be a big piece of metal with a hard drive inside of it. Go ahead and remove the one screw that is holding in the metal piece, then also look on the bottom of the tower to be sure that there isn't one screw that is holding in the metal piece as well, if there is one then remove that one as well.

At this point, go ahead and remove the ide cable and the power connector and remove the metal piece with the hard drive conected to it.

Once you have it out go ahead and look on the sides of the hard drive holder and there might be one or two screws on both sides that need to be removed. Go ahead and remove them. Now the hard drive should come out.

Keep in mind the position the hard drive was in then go ahead and put the new hard drive in its place. Put the screws back on so the hard drive stays in place in the metal holder.
Then go ahead and put the whole thing back into its position inside of the tower and put the screw back into its place to hold the metal holder and if you had a screw on the bottom then put that back as well.

Hook the IDE cable and power connector back up to the hard drive.

Now go ahead and turn on the computer and press F2 to get into the BIOS, and you should see the hard drive into there. This will let you know that the hard drive was hooked up properly and the computer is seeing it.

Keep in mind that computer can see any size IDE Hard Drive so go ahead and get what you need.
Very easy to do. You will need an antistatic wrist strap. Unscrew the screw/thumb screws on the side of the case which slides off. slide the case door off, connect your anti static wrist strap to you and a metal part of the case, to ensure you are grounded and don't fry any parts. Check what sort of hard disk your motherboard supports, it could be IDE or Sata. Older ones use IDE. Get a hard disc to match and plug it in where your old hard drive was. The hard drive is probably held in by clips or screws. remove them and place the new hard drive in the hard drive bays. Wire it up. You will need to install an operating system on your new hard drive. This can be done by getting a windows boot cd, entering the bios on startup by hitting the delete or f12 key/ the specified key. Then in the bios go to boot device priority set it to CD. Then reboot and it will install it on your new hard drive. Hope that helps.
