Having problems with your Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop ?

I have a 6 year old desktop. After being on it a while the computer screen goes black and it shuts down. I can turn it off, then on, and it will start working again. This goes on several times a day. Yesterday, we took it apart, cleaned the fan and ran it without putting the side panel back on. It ran perfectly all day and night. Now it just shut down again.

Change power settings and disable hibernation mode:
\015\012
\015\012Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.
\015\012
\015\012On pewer schemes, make sure, Never is chosen. This means the monitor, computer and hard drive will never go off.
\015\012
\015\012Click on the hibernate button. Uncheck enable hibernation. Click apply.
\015\012
\015\012Windows had a great concept but not so great of an implementation with the hibernation mode, especially for the compaq presarios. The compaqs have a hard time "coming out" of hibernation mode.
\015\012
\015\012I would also run a test on the power supply and change it if it is six years old. Most pc's that come to my shop (compaq's) have a bat PSU (power supply unit). Better to change it now before it takes out other hardware such as motherboard, etc. You can find one, new, for a great price on eBay.
\015\012
\015\012You can also try and unplug the cdrom drive and see if this makes a difference. When the CDrom goes out, it brings the whole computer down (the way you described).
\015\012
\015\012Hope this helps!
