Compaq Presario 4410US Memory Upgrade Problem

\015 I have an old Presario (pre-2001) that has 384KB of SDRAM (2 slots, 256K in one, 128K in the other). According to various memory suppliers on the web, the system should support a max of 512KB, so I bought a 256KB SIMM (PC-100/133) and installed it in place of the 128KB SIMM. Upon powering up the PC, the screen says that I have more memory than the system can support. I have also upgraded the BIOS to the latest version available and still no luck. Any thoughts?\015

Is it the motherboard telling you this or the operating system? Are you running windows 98 or windows 200? If the operating system is telling you this and you are running windows 98 then that could be the reason. Windows 98 seemed to have problems running 512mb of memory. Also make sure memory latency and voltage are correct ion the BIOS. The older motherboards could not always auto detect memory and you may need to adjust the memory settings in the BIOS. Try running the computer with just the new stick of memory installed...just to make sure memory works and is good.

In some instances your PC may not be properly recognizing one or more\015\012memory modules. Because you've recently installed new memory, check to be\015\012sure it's properly seated in its socket and the module is compatible\015\012with your system.

If the module is properly secured and\015\012appears to be compatible with your system, remove the RAM and try cleaning the pins using\015\012rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. Clean each socket on the\015\012motherboard, as well with a soft, clean, dry paintbrush and then blow the remaining dust out.

If problems persist, try changing the\015\012order of your memory modules. DIMM sockets on the motherboard are\015\012labeled (DIMM0, DIMM1, etc). You should always start installing memory\015\012in the lowest numbered socket available. In many cases, the BIOS will\015\012probe the memory module in DIMM0 and address all memory according to\015\012the specifications of the module in DIMM0. If you've installed faster\015\012memory in DIMM0, the system may not be able to communicate with slower\015\012modules in other slots. Placing a slower module in DIMM0 may fix your\015\012problems; however, the faster modules will then, of course, run at a\015\012slower speed).

Hope this helps.
