Having problems with your Compaq Armada E500 Notebook ?

Dropped laptop...damaged hdd or something else?

\015 I\342\200\231m always telling my kids to be careful with their electronics. Well, as luck would have it, I dropped their laptop, an Acer Aspire 5720, while it was turned on. I have a very basic understanding of computers and can follow instructions; however I lack understanding of how everything \342\200\234fits\342\200\235 together. I google problems, try the fix, get a new problem to google, try the fix, and on and on\342\200\246.so, I\342\200\231ve tried lots of things this time, but now am at a loss. Here\342\200\231s what\342\200\231s happened thus far:After the drop, computer was frozen on the desktop, so I did a Ctl-Alt-Del. It appeared to boot up, go through the Acer startup screen with the F2 to setup option, display the message prepare boot to OS, then freeze on a black screen with a flashing cursor. All my research pointed to a damaged hdd, so, I removed the WD sata hdd, ran to the local office store and picked up a Seagate sata hdd. (I left the wd hdd with the tech, who\342\200\231d started a scan and saw there was damage, but would be able to retrieve some data.)I installed the new hdd, and turned the computer on so I could open the dvd drive to put in the recovery cd. Again, it appeared to be booting up \342\200\223 got the Acer screen, boot to OS message, and then an error: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable.PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.I took the opportunity to put in the recovery cd, shut down and tried it again. Same message. This happened a few times, both with the cd in or out, and in different orders.Research of the error led me to go into bios and disable the LAN in the boot sequence. That eliminated the media test failure, but I then started getting this error:No bootable device \342\200\223 insert boot disk and press any keyIt seems the components are working and I\342\200\231ve tried I think, all possible combinations:with the cd in, without it, with different boot sequences, with SATA mode as AHCI, then as IDE. I\342\200\231ve made sure the hdd is plugged in tightly.Bios recognizes the new HDD model & serial number. Bios also displays the correct ATAPI model & serial number.Hitting C during startup does not force it to start with CD.I can\342\200\231t get into safe mode.I hear the HDD revving up at startup. The dvd/cd light comes on and I can hear it reading/starting as well. I can\342\200\231t get any further with my googling as the fixes are now going in circles. I\342\200\231m not sure where to go from here, and wondered what basic thing I might be overlooking? Any suggestions how to proceed or what might be \342\200\234broken\342\200\235?Thanks in advance!!
