Gateway laptop wont recognize the disk drive

\015 Gateway laptop wouldnt load. thought the hard drive was dying so i replaced it. when trying to load windows xp using the disk i get an error "drive does not exist" then i get an error "setupdd.sys"\015

You must "setup" your new drive. You should have received a cd or floppy with the new drive. Purpose of that disk is to prepare the drive to receive information (format it, partician it, make it so it can tell the BIOS who it is and were it is located).
\015\012Do you do maintenance regularly on your drive? Clean and defragment? If not - please return your old drive to your computer. Get CClean a free download (google it). Run it to clean temp files. Also run the Registry cleaner. Next get Spy Bot - Search and destroy from www.PCWorld.com another free download. Run that to get rid of spyware. Get Regcleaner from www.comodo.com (free) and run that. and lastly, visit www.pcpitstop.com and have then do a free scan of your computer. Read their very comprehensive report. Then check your computer - run any better? No - replace the drive.

When you replaced the hard drive did you initialize the hard drive with the included software? New drives have to be initialized to work. Otherwise they will not show up in the device menu.
