NEED ASSISTANCE w/ DELL PC

When you first turn on the system, listen closely for any beeps. If you hear any try to remember or write down the pattern of beeps. Then go to Dell's site and find the manual for your model and look up the BIOS or CMOS error codes. This will indicate the problem it is having.

\015\012If you do not hear any beeps then you most likely have 1 of 3 problems; memory, processor, or motherboard. The sound you are hearing is probably the fan which will run as long as it receives power. If this is the case and you feel comfortable opening the box, first try resetting the BIOS or CMOS. Look for a small button on the motherboard that indicates resetting either BIOS or CMOS. Hold down for 30 seconds. If you do not see a button then look for a jumper set that indicates the same. I have included a picture of what this should look like.cmos+jumper.gif It is usually located next to the round battery that is pictured.
\015\012Move the jumper (the white plastic piece in the picture, may be a different color on your motherboard) to the reset pins (metal pins the jumper sits on, usually 2 and 3 but should be indicated on the board itself next to the pins). Turn on the machine and should indicate the CMOS was reset, if that is what it needed. Then turn off the machine, move the jumper back, turn back on to see if that fixed the issue. It that does not work then try pulling out the memory. You can do this by pulling back the levers that hold in the memory stick (pictured below) and pull
\015\012out the stick.

\015\012If you have another memory stick you can test it with then install it and start it up to see if it reacts different. If that does not change the response and you have an extra processor that is compatible with the board you can switch out the processor and see if that changes the results. If you do both these steps and neither work the motherboard is the problem and will need to be replaced.
\015\012NOTE: Whenever working on any component inside a computer ALWAYS keep your hand or arm in contact with the metal part of the case. This prevents you from shocking any components you handle with static electricity!

\015\012check the cable which goes from the tower to the monitor. Unplugg it and plug it again while the computer is off. Make sure that you tighten the screws and its fitted properly. Than turn the comp on.
