Compatability of Memory Upgrade

\015 I had the Memory stick that came with my Acer Aspire T-180 dekstop computer of 512 DDR2 5300 (555mhz) 240 Pin DIMM in the first slot.\015\012\015\012I added a 1GB stick of Kybte brand 5300/4200/3200 PC2-667/533/400 240 PIN DIMM (no problems - computer worked fine)\015\012\015\012Then I added a generic 1GB stick of PC2-4200 DDR2(533mhz) 240 Pin DIMM (Computer seemed fine for about a month)\015\012\015\012Then had the following problems:\015\012\015\0121) computer shuts itself off and on quickly at random and slows down considerably to point cannot open word. I replaced my motherboard.\015\012\015\0122) When I put the computer back together I had the generic 1GB PC2-4200 stick in first memory slot, the kybte 1GB (5300/4200/3200) stick in the second slot and the factory 512mb (5300) stick in third slot.\015\012\015\012Computer seemed to work for a bit and then kept crashing. Reformated entire computer to default factory settings about 5 times then sent back for servicing.\015\012\015\012My question: Is it the memory configuration causing my problems or it is a faulty (lemon) computer. I've only had it a few months.\015\012\015\012Acer E560 compatibility in memory upgrade\015

DDR RAM needs to be installed in pairs, as in if you have two 1GB sticks these would, in a four slot board, be inserted in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4. The other odd 512MB stick could go in any other slot theoretically speaking. But, you would be better off leaving it out. The SPD chips on the two 1GB sticks should match themselves to time at the slowest common or fastest common denominator.

There is a chance that by having the odd bank population that you said worked for awhile installed as you had, that the MB RAM slots were put under unusual voltage stess. There is a pretty good chance you can remove the 512MB stick, leave the two 1GB sticks in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4. But, this is VERY important: consult your board manual or access it online and read what the population requirments are for the slots as in some cases, the two matched sticks go in 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. This little oddity is found from time to time.

Consult your manual or download it and read how the slots need to be populated and stick with the two 1GB sticks.

There are memory testing programs you can find for free at majorgeeks dot com and test your RAM once you have it populated correctly.

In the future, I'd suggest you purchase RAM from Kingston or Corsair directly online as they usually offer a lifetime warranty and this RAM right now for you board is dirt cheap.

Hope this FIXED, as in ANSWERED you question and was more than helpful. Should you feel compelled to rate this solution after reading, either rate it FIXED or not at all. I know its helpful by default, that's what we do here. But only a thorough answer can FIX your situation. You should be fine if you follow my instructions. But, please consult you manual.
