Pc shutting down possibly overheating when used

Answers :

Hello,

You would be correct in thinking your PC's Motherboard would terminate your session from an overheat at your CPU but your Power Supply can do this as well if it is not sufficient to supply your system while under demand or not.

The clue is whether you are hearing beep warning prior to shut down. Those beeps would be the warning built into Windows and the MB both to warn you you are overheating at the CPU. Most MBs are sophisticated enough today to shut you down if you're not around or just do it anyway.

If it is your CPU your fan is probably dirty and the heat sink underneath as well. Just blow those out with canned air and that should solve your problem

If you're not hearing beeps then your Power Supply is weak in one fashion or another not worth going into here because of the many variables.

If your system is rather new you can probably get a tech onsite to have it replaced under warranty. But you will get the same weak power supply and not a better one so, in the meantime you will want to consider getting a larger power supply, in wattage supplied that is. The standard today is to go with a minimum of 700Watts and if you're a gamer with a lot of RAM and hard drives and dual PCIe display adapters yo will want a 1,000 Watt Power Supply.

You can find the model of your choosing at NewEgg.com and these are easy enough to replace. I would suggest an Antec model or PC Power and Cooling if you have the bucks. The wiring inside your PC can be something of a pain depending on how big your interior space is. Most of us use tie wraps to bundle power cables and keep the cables tamed as much as possible. If you buy the retail Power Supply vs. the OEM version you will get full instructions. But, in your case you can examine your current interior and even take a photo of it with your cell phone and email it to yourself as a guide in hooking everything up. Just keep the power cord disconnected from the wall until you're done and watch out for elements on your MB that could be bent by your hands and fingers handling the cords.
