Having problems with your PC Desktops ?

SPoradic faults when booting

\015 Sometimes when I turn my PC on it will all work fine but more and more often I turn it on and the fans will start but the power light and HDD light will not come on ( no noise from HDD no boot up nothing but fans) I had this problem a few months ago and it was bad connection between fan heatsink and CPU it turned out one of the pins had broken so replaced the fan and it was fine but now a smilar problem, checked fan and its fine, sometimes it works with a tap to the side of the case, I 'wiggled' a few wires this morning while checking connections and moved a 4 pin wire just above the fan and it started fine ( I know I shouldn't mess with wires while Comp is on but was the only way)!! I sometimes have screen freeze then it takes several attempts to reboot or it will turn itself off randomly ( I have no idea what motherboard I'm using although my processor is Intel also running XP ) did increase memory 2 years ago and its worked fine for 2 years !!\015

This problem isn't easy to diagnose, but there are some things you can try to narrow down the problem. Do this at your own risk, but go into the bios settings and check your processor temperature. Take note that if there's a a feature to enable processor throttling (on-die throttling) your processor will slow down significantly. You will be rewarded by taking the time to make sure your heatsink is mounted on the cpu perfectly with good thermal paste. I know that heatsink is hard to snap in there and I would recommend practicing it a couple times with the processor not in the socket. Then clean the processor face and heatsink with alcohol. Once you "squish" the bead of thermal paste on there the first time, you cannot pull back. If you move the heatsink even a little air will get pulled into the thermal paste and make your processor overheat. This could make it slow down to a crawl to keep from burning up or it'll simply turn the computer off. \015\012
\015\012If your motherboard has an onboard speaker (the thing that beeps once when you turn it on) see if it beeps in a certain pattern when you turn the computer on and the problem happens. This pattern is an error code you can look up to tell you what part of the machine is malfunctioning. If your mobo doesn't have a speaker, you can pick one up at radioshack for about 3 dollars that just plugs in.\015\012
\015\012Your power supply may be to blame. I'm assuming it's a cheap or oem one and the connectors are inferior and almost worn out. If the power connectors aren't seated properly in the components, it's possible that the power connector on the motherboard will power the power supply on, powering the fans and everything, but some of the special voltages exotic components need to run isn't there. A part of your power supply also may be failing and trying to warn you.\015\012
\015\012If the broken cpu pin you refer to is one of the contact pins the cpu uses to connect to the motherboard, that could cause all kings of problems.\015\012
\015\012Lastly, a computer's ram seems to be the magical thing that randomly decides for no reason to not work sometimes. Run an analysis on your ram, try even switching the sticks to different slots. If the sticks are cheap, or old, they maybe randomly failing. The ram brings the computer down when it does. Ram sticks are actually only rated for a finite number of insertions. When you plug it into the socket, the contacts get scraped. Most ram significantly diminishes after only 5-6 insertions!
