Pc shuts down ,reason cpu overheating

\015 My pc shuts down within 10 min of starting it.When i restart,i get a message that cpu was shut down due to a thermal event. In case of games this shut down is instantaneous.I opened up my pc to see whats wrong. I found out that the intake fan wasn't rotating fast. I replaced it with my friends old one .the power ratings were a bit different though ,the old one had a rating of DC 12v max .13A,the new one has a rating of DC 12v max 0.20A.The fan is working properly. The problem still persists.I have even removed side panels and am providing external cooling through a table fan.I also cleaned my pc.One more thing within 2 min of windows starting the pc slows down.its like the pc hangs every 2 seconds for a second. After 5 min the pc goes off.I got a core2duo 1.8 ghz. 1.5gb ram, 8800 gt graphics card.My motherboard is,Intel D946GZisplz help !thanks for your time :)shreyas\015

Since you have cleaned the inside thoroughly, could be a capacitor problem - replace capacitors.

It's also possible that there is a bad thermal contact between the NorthBridge chip \015\012and it's heatsink. That's the chip/heatsink combo immediately below the \015\012processor. Just remove the spring clip that holds the heatsink in place. Use a toothbrush and a \015\012good solvent such as denatured alcohol to remove the thermal pad and \015\012associated heatsink compound from the heatsink. Then remove all residual \015\012heatsink compound from the chip itself. Once everything is very clean, apply a \015\012VERY THIN coat of new heatsink compound to the top of the chip AND the bottom \015\012area of the heatsink where it comes into contact with the chip.

If this doesn't do the trick, you probably have a bad motherboard.
You need to remove the fan and cpu heat sink, and clean and reapply heat sink compound. Put a thin layer on cpu then install heat sink and lightly push down and give it a little twisting motion to spread compound, install fan then clip down or clip then put fan on what ever your system requires.
Thanks for using fixya!
