Most likely the drive is bad. They are fairly simple to replace. Just go down to your favorite Big Box store and buy a DVD drive off the shelf.
Assuming this is no longer under warranty of any kind, you can just take the side panel off and look and see whether it's got a big, wide "ribbon cable" going to it or if it's got a small, narrow cable going to it.

If it's a big, wide cable, you'll need an IDE DVD ROM. Those can be had almost anywhere, but I personally like NewEgg.com for this sort of thing. If you are in a hurry, you can go down to your local Wal-Mart or computer store and pick one up there, but you'll pay more for it, in all likelihood. If it's a small, narrow cable going to it, then it's a newer SATA drive.

I would not spend more than about $20-25 for a DVD ROM drive. You can pick up a DVD burner for about $50. Again, make sure that you figure out of it's IDE or SATA as it makes a difference.

Once you have the replacement drive, turn off your computer, unplug the power cord and push the power button to discharge the capacitors. I recommend the following procedures be done on a hard-surface to reduce static build-up.

There are probably 4 screws holding the old drive into the case, two on each side. Unscrew them and unplug all cables from the old drive. Slide the old drive out and slide the new one in and connect the cables back where they were on the old drive. They should only go in one way, but if the data cable (a flat wide multi-wire cable with a single color stripe most likely) will go in either way, you typically want the colored stripe to go towards the power connector. Typically they are "keyed" either by a bump on the top or a missing hole in one spot to make it impossible to put the cable on wrong. Be careful as it's easy to bend the pins when removing or replacing the cable. BE GENTLE!!!

Once you have the new drive in position, use the screws you took out of the old drive to secure the new drive in place and prevent it from sliding around. Then, power it on and wait for the new drive to be detected.
