Having problems with your PC Desktops ?

The computer sounds like it's racing. It speeds up and slows down. It's not the normal sound, it's been doing this for about two weeks and I cleaned the dust out of the fans that I could get to.

Answers :

If the PC is a few years old, the bearing on the fans might be failing, causing more noise. The speeding/slowing is because the temperature sensors on the motherboard, fan, or case are telling the fans what speed to go for more or less cooling.

If you can, run the PC with the case open and (being careful of course) try to listen to where the noise is coming from. If it's from a case fan, you can remove them, run them under warm water to wash them out good, shake them out well, then dry them for a few hours in front of a fan to make sure there's no water left inside - then reinstall. If you have to replace them, measure the length of the side in millimeters (probably 60, 80, 92, or 100mm) and buy a replacement at the PC store or online.

If it's the fan on the CPU heatsink on the motherboard, don't try to remove it unless you want to replace it - heatsink and all. Sometimes the CPU fan and heatsink are screwed together, so you can't get one w/o the other, and once you pull off the heatsink, you need thermal paste to put it back on. Just try vacuuming the CPU fan and heatsink carefully with a brush attachment. Make sure the PC is off while you do that of course.

If it's the power supply - the square box inside the case where the power cord plugs into from the outside, try vacuuming out all of the holes. There is a cooling fan in there as well, but it is inaccessible. Do not ever try removing a power supply and running water through it. Don't even try removing one and opening it for that matter. If it's too noisy for your liking, replace it with a similar sized model.
