Having problems with your PC Desktops ?

My eMac will not turn on. I had it in the "sleep mode" and there was a short power outage in the Los Angeles area. Later when I came to my Mac, I couldn't get it to turn on. Is there a fuse that's replaceable or a reset button that should be pressed? Please help. Thanks, Reggie

Hi!
\015\012
\015\012There is a power supply failure, please check the power supply--
\015\012
    \015\012
  • Step 1: Plug the PC into an electrical outlet rather than relying on a battery to power up the system.
  • \015\012
  • Step 2: Eliminate a faulty electrical cord as the culprit. Examine the cord that runs from the PC to the wall outlet. Determine whether there are any indicator lights within the cord itself to identify functionality. If there is such a light and it is not lit when plugged in, the problem may be with the cord and not the PC.
  • \015\012
  • Step 3: Try to turn the PC on. To diagnose the internal power supply as the culprit, it is essential that there be no sound or monitor activity whatsoever. The PC needs to be completely dead.
  • \015\012
  • Step 4: Unplug the PC.
  • \015\012
  • Step 5: Open the PC.
  • \015\012
  • Step 6: Identify the power supply. It will be a metal box containing a power cord receptacle (where you plug in the PC's power cord) and a small fan. It is usually located in a corner of a desktop PC.
  • \015\012
  • Step 7: Remove the power supply plug from the motherboard.
  • \015\012
  • Step 8: Insert a paperclip into the terminals (usually colored black and green) of the power supply plug.
  • \015\012
  • Step 9: Plug the PC directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord.
  • \015\012
  • Step 10: Press the power button on the computer.
  • \015\012
  • Step 11: Examine the PC fan inside the power supply to see if it is spinning. If it is not, then you have diagnosed a failed power supply.
\015\012
    \015\012
  • If, after you remove the power supply plug from the mother board, insert a paperclip into the plug's terminals and press the power button, the fan inside the power supply does spin, the problem is a failed motherboard rather than a failed power supply.
\015\012
\015\012 The eMac's power supply is NOT auto-switching. The popping sound you heard was the power supply blowing out. Hopefully it will turn out to be just the internal fuse that's part of the power supply, and not the power supply itself, let alone the logic board. Just how bad the damage is would depend, I suppose, on just how fast that particular 'fast-acting' fuse actually is the problem.
\015\012
\015\012If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working wall outlet, and that it's properly connected to the power adapter. (To check if the wall socket is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.)\015\012
  2. Make sure that the power adapter is properly connected to the power port on the back of the computer.\015\012
  3. Disconnect all accessories that are plugged into the computer, such as a printer, hub, or iPod.\015\012
  4. Reset the computer's PMU or PRAM.\015\012
      \015\012
    • For a portable (iBook or PowerBook), click here for instructions.\015\012
    • For a Mac mini, click here.\015\012
    • For an iMac, click here.\015\012
    • For a Power Mac, click here.\015\012
    • For a Mac Pro click here.\015\012
    • For a MacBook or MacBook Pro, click here.\015\012
    • For any other computer, click here for instructions on resetting the PRAM.
    \015\012
  5. Try plugging a different power cord into the computer (if you have a working one available). If the computer starts up, replace the old power cord. You can get a replacement cord for some models here.\015\012
  6. If the computer uses a power adapter, try connecting a different power adapter to the computer (if you have a working one available). If the computer starts up, replace the old power adapter. (Computers that use a power adapter include MacBook, MacBook Pro, iBooks, PowerBooks, Power Mac G4 Cube, and Mac mini.)\015\012
  7. If you tried all of the steps above and the computer still won't turn on, contact Apple technical support (1-800-APL-CARE in the U.S.) or take your computer to your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis.
